response to kathie
Yes Kathie, it's sad that schools institutionalize/standardize knowledge. To me, that means students are taught to shut up, sit still, and give the "correct" answers like good little parrots in order to pass tests. They are not taught to use their souls or imaginations and are not allowed to have thier own pace or process when learning. Even when fiction is taught, historical context is almost always left out. How can readers truly understand works of art and literature if its not placed in its times. The story's essence will be lost. Teaching fiction in historical context is one means of activating the student's imagination- if taught with imagination. Schools need to change the way students are taught, but I doubt I will see this in my life time.
